The Old Map

Ezo Survey Map, 1859

A single map, drawn by a man who walked Ezo six times in the last years of the shogunate. Drag the handle across the map, and today's Hokkaido gives way to the place names written down here 170 years ago.

Who was Matsuura Takeshiro?

Matsuura Takeshiro (1818-1888) was born in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, and travelled through Ezo six times in the final years of the shogunate. Wherever he went, he asked the people living there what a place was called, and wrote down what he heard - some 9,800 names in all.

When the island was later given a new name, Takeshiro proposed "Hokkaido," writing kai with characters he explained as the word by which the people of this land called themselves. The name we use today comes from that proposal.
